A local IT expert estimates that thousands of Plymouth businesses have missed a critical deadline to update software – and are now at risk.

Just days ago, on the 14th January, Microsoft killed its popular but out-of-date software Windows 7.

It also killed Office 2010, and a series of old server software.

“The problem is that too many businesses round here are still relying on this dead software – and don’t realise the implications,” said local expert Martin Limburn of Limbtec.

“Once software reaches end of life, it means no-one will fix it when it breaks or gets hacked. We believe hackers have been sitting on vulnerabilities they’ve discovered, waiting for this moment. That puts local businesses at risk.”

He added: “Using out-of-date software also means your business will no longer be compliant under GDPR rules.”

The fix for dead Windows 7 is actually quite simple: Upgrading to the latest Windows 10.

Martin has been promoting this in the local area for the last year.

And believes many local businesses simply don’t realise they’re running now dead software.

He has a free book written in layman’s terms, that helps Plymouth business owners & managers to identify whether they’re running risky old software.
