A number of cutting-edge companies at Plymouth Science Park are presently celebrating having been judged as the ‘cream of the crop’ at this year’s Plymouth Business Awards.

Scores of companies were nominated for the accolades which are eagerly awaited by the corporate world as they cover more than 15 categories.

Moortec and Sponge were announced as winners in their respective categories with Ultracardiac receiving special praise from the judging panel.

Sponge’s position as a market leader was further enhanced with the title of Best Regional Medium Sized Business being awarded to them.

The team produces digital training solutions for companies around the world, including a virtual reality scenario designed for postal workers to show them how best to react when confronted by an aggressive dog.

‘Winning this category is testament to the contribution we’ve made and continue to make to the local economy, which goes beyond the digital sector into the mainstream,’ says Louise Pasterfield, Founder and Managing Director of digital learning provider, Sponge.

‘Over the past 15 years, we’ve received a number of regional accolades and awards which recognise our successes in the tech and creative markets.’

‘We’re particularly proud of the employment opportunities we’ve created in our Plymouth office and beyond. And we’re really excited to launch our Design and Animation Academies as a means to cultivate and nurture young talent in the South West.’

Moortec won thanks to its tireless work in providing cutting edge technology in the production of miniscule monitoring systems which fit within tiny electrical circuits.

‘Moortec is immensely proud to have won the "Best Tech Business" category at the Plymouth Business Awards,’ says Ramsay Allen, Vice President of Marketing at Moortec.

‘This is a huge achievement and recognises the hard work of the whole Moortec Team.’

‘Moortec is a great example of a local technological business which is operating globally using Plymouth, Britain's Ocean City, as a base to expand its cutting-edge in-chip monitoring product portfolio into new regions and markets.’

‘You may well have some Moortec technology in your hands right now, hidden deep within your mobile phone, tablet or laptop. Monitoring conditions on microchips have become essential in the modern digital industry, the main challenges are performance (for power or speed) and the reliability of the device.’

‘Moortec's products address these challenges which are faced by many different industries the world over including consumer electronics, automotive and other emerging sectors like Artificial Intelligence. We would like to congratulate all the other winners and finalists and thank Wolferstans Solicitors for sponsoring the category.’

Ultracardiac won a Judges Special Commendation for its work in providing detailed heart scans (echocardiograms) for patients. The team has now worked with more than 10,000 patients and has recently tripled in size having moved into new premises at Plymouth Science Park.

‘We are naturally delighted to receive this accolade as it reaffirms the positive effect which Ultracardiac is having on the lives of patients who are able to access an efficient service that helps to reduce waiting times for cardiology departments in the NHS,’ says Sarah Gundry, Ultracardiac’s Managing Director.

‘We have doubled staff in less than two years and recently moved into new premises at Plymouth Science Park which allows us to continue to provide an exceptionally high level of patient care.’

More than 1000 people work in the 85 companies based on the Plymouth Science Park campus, these businesses have been attracted by the world-class on-site office, laboratory and research facilities. The awards reaffirm the close link PSP shares with the University of Plymouth.

‘It is very rewarding to see such tremendous scale up growth from our tenants. I am delighted so see them being honoured for their entrepreneurial spirit and for delivering high value graduate jobs to the region,’ says Ian McFadzen, CEO of Plymouth Science Park.

‘The success enjoyed by Plymouth Science Park companies at the Business Awards speak volumes not only for their achievements but also the quality of the environment that has been established between the University and PSP,’ says Rich Adams, Corporate Projects Manager at the University of Plymouth.

'Together, we are creating excellent opportunities for graduates and researchers, which, in turn, helps to cement Plymouth's reputation as a world-class centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicines and Mathematics.'
