Two dead after car plunges into lake

Two people have died after a car was submerged in Hooe Lake in Turnchapel, Plymouth, yesterday (25 August).

Police and emergency services were called at 1.55pm after reports that the vehicle had left the road and entered the lake.

The Peugeot estate ended up on its roof and became submerged in the water.

Police officers and members of the public entered the water in an effort to rescue the occupants.

A 75-year-old man from Plymouth was freed from the vehicle. Police officers administered CPR on the man before ambulance crews arrived at the scene. He was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth where he was confirmed as deceased.

An elderly woman was also recovered from the vehicle by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. She was also confirmed as deceased at Derriford.

Police, ambulance, the air ambulance, HM Coastguard and Lifeboat, Police Drone Unit and MoD Police all attended.

Formal ID has yet to have taken place but next of kin have been informed. The vehicle in question has been recovered and is being examined by experts.

Police are currently treating the death as unexplained and are appealing for witnesses.
