Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is recognised as one of the top NHS providers of apprenticeships in the South West and is continuously growing its investment in young people to work and develop their careers in the NHS, in a diversity of apprenticeship roles.

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2016 (14 March - 18 March), the Trust has been working hard to promote apprenticeships and working for the NHS and has much planned for the week of celebrations.

This has included the introduction of seven apprenticeship ambassadors, at various stages of their careers, who volunteered to be part of the Plymouth Apprenticeship Ambassadors Network and share their personal experiences and career pathway journey.

In the lead up to the week, our ambassadors have been going out to schools career events, presenting at employability events and assemblies, to raise the profile of apprenticeships and aspirations of young people.

To celebrate the week, the Trust has organised events to run throughout, including ‘Tea with our Ambassadors’ which will see our ambassadors share their experiences with some of our Executive Team and an executive job swap with Greg Dix, Director of Nursing, and Russell Mole in our Surgical Decontamination Unit, where we have launched the new Health Care Support Worker apprenticeship.

The main event of the week will see students from six local schools in Plymouth invited into the hospital for a tour around various areas, showcasing the diverse range of careers available, to inspire and provide an insight into career pathways.

Areas to be visited include administration, information technology, surgical decontamination unit, laboratories and a training session to gain an insight into health care, which will include learning hand hygiene and catheterisation.

Mandy Johnson, Vocational Pathways Advisor, responsible for organising the programme of events, said: “This has been and will be a fantastic opportunity for young people to see what an apprenticeship is, and to show the benefits, level of commitment and long term career value that we offer.

“Following on from last year, I hope that the tours organised will provide a valuable and practical insight and showcase just a few of our many areas that our apprentices work in.”
On the 19th March, Plymouth Hospitals will be opening its doors for an Open Day.

The event will provide an opportunity for anyone to find out more about careers and apprenticeships within the Trust, as well as much more. Please come along between 10am – 2pm if you are interested.-
