Stagecoach confirms link to Plymouth Railway Station

Stagecoach has confirmed that, starting 26 November, it will be introducing an alteration to its route 1 service to improve access to Plymouth Railway Station.

The alteration is in response to customer suggestions and will see buses from Tavistock serving North Road East instead of North Hill, providing a much closer connection to Plymouth Railway Station.

Customers who wish to travel from the station towards Tavistock will also need to board the in-bound service and then remain on the bus as it goes via the city centre and Plymouth University before heading back to Tavistock.

The route change will apply to all journeys on the service, effectively doubling the frequency to the station when compared to the original X1 service. It will also provide connections in the evenings and on Sundays for the very first time, create a new link between Mutley Plain and the Station and further enhance the number of buses running directly from Derriford Hospital to the Station.

Robert Williams, Commercial Director for Stagecoach South West commented: “I’d like to thank all the members of the public who took the time to make constructive suggestions on how to improve our service and better meet their needs. Whilst we can’t accommodate everybody’s request, I hope that this change will improve the service for the majority of people in the area.”

Councillor Sellis, County Councillor for Tavistock and Gulworthy, said: “Stagecoach was most reasonable when I contacted them. Our bus and train using community were genuinely concerned about the changes to the routing of the X1 bus not stopping by the Plymouth Rail Station. When Stagecoach directors and managers visited Tavistock they stayed for four hours to listen to their customers.

“We are all encouraged to use buses and trains and, when difficulties occur, it is good to be able to work together and iron challenges out!”

From the same date, Stagecoach has also announced the trial of a Sunday Park & Ride service operating on the five Sundays before Christmas. Buses will run from the George Junction and Milehouse (100/101) sites from just after 9am with the last service leaving the city centre at 5.30pm. With Park & Ride, it’s free to park, you just pay to ride and there are a number of great value ticket options including discounts for children and groups travelling together. All buses also have free Wi-Fi, making the whole experience much more pleasant than having to queue and pay for a city centre car park.

There will also be an improved frequency on Saturday journeys on Coypool Park & Ride (200) however this will remain closed on Sundays.
