An academy in Plymouth is set to purchase new outside play space for its children thanks to a donation from a leading UK housebuilder.

St Matthew’s Academy, which is based off Peregrine Road in the city, has been chosen to receive £1,000 as one of Persimmon Homes Cornwall’s Community Champions, a scheme which rewards those that do valuable work in the community.

The school plans to use the funds to support the development of a spiritual garden.

Andrea Smith, headteacher at the academy, said: “We are so thankful for this generous funding from Persimmon Homes Cornwall, which will be put towards our spiritual garden project.

“The space will be fantastic for the children at St Matthews and will include a memory tree, seating, water fountain, wooden musical instruments and mirrors.

“We have raised funds throughout the past year so we are over the moon to be recognised in this way.”

Daniel Heathcote, director in charge for Persimmon Homes Cornwall, said: “St Matthew’s spiritual garden project is something we wanted to get behind; they are fitting recipients of our £1,000 donation.

“As always it was a difficult decision to select our Community Champions but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time, even if they have won previously, to apply again.”

Persimmon Homes Cornwall is currently building at Saltram Meadow in Plymouth.
